The blessings I asked for are actually hard as hell lmaoooo
this month has been dedicated to august 31st through september 2nd. ie the days of my shows and their setups. From cranking out pieces, sawdust and woodchips flying, slowly draining my bank account, and thinning my hairline a bit further, ive been busy af. im just happy its fun busy and not i want to disintegrate busy.
But in the same way throwing a house party will make you clean even the annoying parts of your house, setting up this show has exposed a lot of fundamentals that I’ve ignored. The dreaded business side of the art. the part of art that separates being an artist vs someone who makes art. From attempting to set up an llc, reworking how to hang pieces, pricing things, organizing a vault of pieces, networking, varnishing, etc etc ive been going insane. mostly cuz these are all things i’ve been wanting to do for a while now.
Its not exactly that I’ve been avoiding them, but i think i’ve always thought that creating art was the most important part of being an artist. But now im thinking its the presentation - how will you get paid? how will people pay you? how will people know you? in a strange way, ive been using working to procrastinate working. while this is definitely better for me as opposed to binging anime to procrastinate, its effects are just as dire.
im trying to think of how i would do things differently, but I know there wasn’t much i can do. there is no deadline for making art. but this was a deadline that got my ass moving. cuz if it wasnt this, then the next set of deadlines id be dealing with is rent, and i rly am not trying to start my shit when that is the deadline. regardless, sometimes overshooting your limits really helps fix the foundations you built.
apply to things you aren’t ready for, cuz by the time ur in the show ur gonna b ready for everything :)
