Raz Does Newsletter - A Case for Arson
I do not endorse destruction of physical property*.
However. I do think we should be comfortable with burning our forests.
Forest fires are historically devastating to both people and nature. Years of work building towards a goal can vanish in an instant. Each step forward makes you more committed to your goal of becoming the best form of yourself; be it as a human or a forest. There’s an unspoken curse in this growth. When you have almost everything, your definition of everything is going to expand. And in expanding your definition of everything,
Life gets boring.
What was a beautiful and magical experience, becomes a monotonous grind, where you are surrounded by everything you have done that you can’t really deviate from. You become oversaturated with yourself and your history. New opportunities are choked out due to the upkeep of everything you have built. Your image, your work, your pride, or your passions. But as a fire sweeps through these forests, the come to grow again. Old trees make life look effortless, as they return along with the new trees to match. We don’t actually know how the trees feel after a fire, but we do know they come back as a full, seemingly more alive being.
With my art, I want people to actually look at the history they’ve made around themselves, and assess whether it’s something they like or not. It doesn’t look like something we have control over, but its surprisingly easy to start a fire, and to start a clean slate in yourself, where everything that you built is fertilizer for the next forest of yours. Starting anew is scary, as is looking into a forest fire. But life grows from it, where a much clearer path forward appears.
Burn your forest,
