*College
Lets talk abt college! For me, I went to the University of Rochester(liberal arts college) from 2017-2021, studying Public Health and Studio Art, then dropping Public Health to switch into Digital Media Studies and Studio Arts. I left Public Health in 2019, as I started to realize that there really isn’t much to be done abt the American Healthcare system (woefully, I was proved correct). It was a great time in my life where I was able to meet amazing people, make some awesome friendships, and learn a lot art myself. I was super social too, which was something I’m v proud of as an introvert- I joined a fraternity (Delta Upsilon), started a few DEI initiatives for greek life, and become a part of the LGBTQ student club’s governing board throughout my time at the university. So many memories, and so many nights I wish I didn’t forget lmao.
But now in the art world, ppl ask a lot if college is necessary. Honestly, idk/not really. In the world of youtube, and social media, its fairly easy to create art that you want with time and dedication. What’s the most important part of artistic homeschooling is actually using the resources you have available. Social media is not just for posting art, but connecting with other artists. Youtube isn’t just for learning how to make art, but also learning about artists through time, and seeing the lifestyles of other artists around you. Finding residencies, galleries, and connecting with other artists would take you just as far, if not more. (cont below)
Im glad to have been able to go to college tho, and I think these are the things that helped me and my art the most:
-Make friends; If I make art for people to see, I need to know what people will see, and how they see things. The more perspectives of people you see, the more you can understand how to display imagery to create a feeling for the viewers
-Mentors; Being surrounded by artists irl is an amazing experiance- we pushed each other the best way possible, and were able to grow bc of seeing other people's art and seeing how they make art. (tldr; easy access to critiques)
-Experience Life; The life of an artist can get monotonous. We found what we love, and are ok with simply creating for the rest of our lives. But as you meet other artists, you are going to want to have new things to talk about besides art. Go outside! Celebrate life! Meet people and see their perspectives! Having things to talk abt outside of art can only make your art better. (podcasts have filled this void for me)
These life skills are really things I need to get back into-i've been enjoying the artist shut-in life, but making art is only a part of life - not all of life.
Much Love,
Faraz
p.s. print store is finally open again! yay! I am legally obligated to make each email just a bit longer each time, so I'm filling in space with this last sentence <3
